However, as this was once an inaccessible wilderness, systematic research into the composition and health benefits of the springs only began at the end of the 18th century. Today, nearly 100 mineral springs rise in and around the town. Spa care is based mainly on six of them. Interest-ingly, these are not thermal springs but cold acidic min-eral springs rich in iron and mineral salts. Their temperature is only 7–10 °C, making them some of the coldest in Czechia.The springs differ significantly from each other and yet often rise to the surface right next to one another – a true global balneological rarity that Mariánské Lázně proudly claims. The springs are so abundant that the drinking cure alone is often very effective in treating various ailments.
